Lazy dogs, near Huntington Beach, Ca

Dang it has been hot outside, not to mention the fires. All the smoke in the air been dang miserable, so it’s Sunday and we decide to head to the beach for some cooler, hopefully, temperatures.  Huntington Beach is were we end up and looks like most people had the same idea.  Yes, yes it was about 20 degrees cooler, but still hot.  We enjoy a couple hours with our toes in the sand and since we didn’t take an ice chest, I mean can you believe we just jumped in car and went with no food or drink? I chalk it up to the heat, lol.  So we decide to pack it up and go find somewhere to go.  As we retrace our drive and head back to towards the 5 frwy, we are scoping out for a place to grab a bite as well as a cool beverage, I am surprised that there are not that many places other than fast food to do just that.  Finally we find a strip mall center with a Marie Calendars and then notice Lazy Dogs, which actually sounds more to our liking and something new to try so we all agree.  I notice they have outside seating and quite a few people out there, but we want a/c.  What are these people nuts?  As we walk inside I am amazed at the size of the place, the atmosphere welcoming. A large bar area, open kitchen along the back wall, huge fireplace on one wall, pictures of dogs framed and a mural of I presume the lazy dog.  Our hostess seats us right away in a booth, provides us with menus and soon after our waitress comes and takes our drink orders. As I scan the menu I am surprised at the wide range of items to choose from, no real theme to the menu, however will provide something for everyone and would be a good choice to go when all can’t decide on exactly what they feel like to eat.

It does seem to be taking longer than it should for our drinks to arrive and we definitely have had plenty of time to decide what we want to eat, finally our waitress comes back and we get to order, but it goes down hill from there.  We wait and wait and wait for our meals to come, so long in fact that we are done with our drinks and waiting to order another.  Since the kitchen is open it is easy to see that they have plenty of cooks on the line and plenty of staff on the floor so we start to joke they had to go catch the shrimp, kill the cow, etc. etc..

Finally she arrives with our plates, but states that she has to come back with the fries for the burger.  I am thinking maybe they ran out and someone had to run to the store for back up and that might be why it took so long.  I also notice that my shrimp tacos look more like coleslaw tacos.  I couldn’t see any shrimp so I start to dig around in the slaw to find that each taco had only 3 small shrimp.  Our waitress then comes back with a plate of fries for my boyfriends burger and we all dig in to see how things taste as we are starving. The sauce on the shrimp tacos was nice and tasty and when I actually got to have a shrimp in a bite they were pretty good. My boyfriend said the burger was mediocre at best with the bun not being all that great and his daughter and her chicken club said the bread was hard to chew.  For 3 starving people you know eating anything was welcome at that point, however we were all left disappointed. The meal for 3, with 4 adult beverages in all came to approximately $60, which I consider not bad on price, definitely lacked the pop that they could of had.  Not sure what was going on that day, or if that is how the meals and service always are, but for our small group we won’t be stopping into Lazy Dogs again sorry to say.
