Bucket weekend on the Colorado River

Anyone that knows me, knows my favorite place is to be is on the river.  The Colorado River that is. Bullhead City, AZ, Laughlin, NV to be specific. The hot hot summer days, mixed with the cold water of the Colorado is a perfect match for some soul therapy.  Not to mention good friends, great people watching, some excellent beaches and sun filled days that last and last. One of the best things is that the river is ever moving, so you can float and your scene changes constantly and on this particular summer day, we are floating down to Pirates Cove to check out all the crazies that are there this weekend.

Pirates cove is a must for at least visiting once in your life.  A place where all people seem to congregate at some part of the day. A half way spot from Lake Havasu and Laughlin, just north of the beautiful wild life gorge and just across the river from Topock, AZ.. The float there takes a few hours so by the time we arrive it is definitely time for a cold libation and something to eat. As we cruise back thru the cove, it is no wake zone so allows for a ton of people watching and believe me there is quite a bit to watch, not to mention the incredible boats of all shapes and sizes lined up on the shoreline from the opening all the way back to the restaurant/bar. Pirates Cove is also a marina, resort and camping area.  So plenty for everyone and although they have ziplines they are shut down this year. If you are not lucky enough to score a spot near and on the same side of the bar, there are water taxis that will come by and pick you up for free and take you conveniently over to the other side. We are lucky and get a prime spot right in front, which is awesome as we can go in and still keep an eye on our boat.

The men at the front check our ID’s and put a wrist band on us that says we are OK to be served alcohol beverages.  This is a place where you seat yourself if you can find a table or place at the bar.  Usually pretty packed on the weekend and holidays.  Misters are around to try and help cool the air some, but at over 105 they offer little comfort, however when the breeze happens to blow them your direction a nice for the second cooler moment is welcome. Again we are lucky to get a table over looking the water. Tables here are big solid pieces of wood, no one can steal these puppies.  Today I am focused on ordering up a Pirates Cove Bucket.  Delicious concoctions to choose from of many varieties.  I decide a Rum punch is perfectly sweet and goes with the theme of the place, which is Pirates of course.  Now the regular drinks come in little bucket cups, but I am going for the share Bucket that comes with 4 straws to pass around.  Believe me it is pricey, but everyone will have a happy smile on there faces when done.

Ordering up some shrimp cocktail and calamari to share as well and we are all happy campers.  Even though the place is packed our drink comes pretty quickly and we all grab a straw.  It is pretty funny to see a group of adults all sharing a huge drink, straws in mouths, but it is a perfect blend and doesn’t disappoint.  Our food is delivered, although we could of used a few more large shrimp it was all very good and just enough to give us sustenance to continue on with are very hard day of being on the river.  I do hope that someday everyone will be able to visit one of my favorite places ever.  Until then aaaarrrrrrrrrr it be time to dip in that water.
