Irish whole wheat soda bread

Having owned a couple British pub restaurants gives way to eating pretty hardy, lol.  Those Brits really do like there food and beer of course.  This recipe for Irish soda bread was one that I used in the pub in Bend, OR.  So for all of you who loved this fresh baked daily basket of bread brought to your table I am finally giving up the recipe for all to enjoy at home. Actually this is not my own recipe but one I found a long time ago on a McCall’s Great American recipe card. Remember those cards that used to come in the mail way way way back to entice you to buy the entire collection? So anyone probably could of looked it up somewhere, lol. Recipe is Pretty easy as it is not a yeast bread, but made with buttermilk, that gives it that rich flavor and since it is not made with yeast the bread is dense enough for dipping into a favorite soup.  Eat away people.

Irish whole wheat soda bread

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

Preheat oven to 375. Grease a small cookie sheet.  In large mixing bowl, sift together all purpose flour, baking powder, soda and salt. Add whole wheat flour, mix well with fork. Add buttermilk, mix just until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn out on well floured surface. Knead until smooth-about 1 minute.  Shape dough into ball. Place on  cookie sheet flattening into 7 inch circle.  Dough will be about 1 1/2 inch thick. press large floured knife into center of loaf almost to the bottom, repeat at right angles dividing loaf into quarters.  Bake for 35-40 minutes or until top is golden and loaf sounds hollow. remove and brush melted butter on top.
